About Our Site - Sinks Canyon State Park

Sinks Canyon State Park is located in west central Wyoming just south of Lander. The park is situated in the Wind River Mountains on the middle fork of the Popo Agie River. The site is named after distinct geologic phenomena in which the Popo Agie river disappears into a limestone cavern and reappears a quarter mile down canyon in a placid pool filled with 8 - 12 lb. rainbow trout. The site has a variety of natural habitats which creates diversity of flora and fauna. The canyon provides a variety of recreational opportunities including nature studies, photography, camping, fishing, hiking, world class rock climbing and access to miles of mountain bike trails.

Sinks Canyon State Park Updates

As fall fades into winter in Sinks Canyon State Park, staff are busy keeping projects moving forward and looking towards the new year.

The cultural surveys have been completed around the proposed site of the via ferrata project on the Sandstone Buttress, and staff are awaiting the results of those surveys. The next step will be to have an engineer conduct a structural analysis of the sandstone area to ensure the integrity of the structure and the safety of guests.

Conversations have also been taking place this fall around the proposed Sunnyside Trail. This multi-use trail is proposed to begin at The Rise and run approximately two miles through the canyon, ending near the State Park/National Forest border.

The trail would welcome hikers, as well as mountain bikers and provide a safe mode of pedestrian travel between The Rise, the Visitor Center and the Popo Agie Campground, as well as up to the climber’s parking lot in the National Forest.

Cultural surveys are scheduled, wildlife impact assessments have been conducted and the trail route is being determined to provide safe pedestrian access and protection for critical wildlife habitats.  Because the trail will be near critical Mule Deer habitat, there will be a strict leash law enforced and potential winter closures to ensure Mule Deer are not diverted from their critical feeding grounds.

In preparation for colder weather, the State Park campgrounds and trails have been winterized. This means water has been turned off and many interpretive graphics have been brought in until spring. Both Sawmill and Popo Agie Campgrounds will remain open all year with first-come, first-serve campsites available.

Four all-weather yurts are also accessible year round and are available through the reservation system at https://wyomingstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping.page or by calling 877-996-7275. Yurts sleep 5-10 guests and have electricity and heat, which make them a great winter getaway!

Water levels have receded in the Boulder Choke Cave which allow for cave tours!  The cave system remains a constant 55 degrees year-round and is accessible all winter long.  Cave tours are currently limited to on-demand group requests, however plans are in the works to develop a weekly tour schedule to allow more frequent access to guests. Be watching for more information on tour times and reservations.

View: "Coffee Time Sinks Canyon Sunnyside Trail Project to soon enter public comment phase; tune in for details" Radio Spot >>

ABOUT

The Sunnyside trail is designed as an beginner-intermediate non-motorized multi-use trail providing crucial access from the Rise up to the Climber's parking area.

This approximately 2-mile natural surface trail is designed to maintain a 4% (beginner) grade and 36-inch width and parallel the highway to provide locals and visitors with safe, accessible travel between existing assets in the park. The goal is to preserve as much habitat as possible while achieving a natural experience for trail users. This trail has been developed in collaboration with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Sinks Canyon State Park, and the Lander Cycling Club.

  • The proposed Sunnyside Trail is a multi-user trail for walkers, hikers and bikers. It is not open to horses or traditional motorized vehicles.
  • The trail will be 36" wide in most places which would allow mobility devices like track chairs to safely experience a trail within SCSP. Mobility devices would be the only exception to the motorized vehicle rule.
  • The trail will offer a safe route for guests who have traditionally walked or cycled on the highway, which is a safety hazard.
  • SCSP has consulted with the Eastern Shoshone, Northern Arapaho, and State Historic Preservation Offices in the selection of the trail route.
  • SCSP has consulted with Game & Fish to determine the route of least impact for wildlife. There will be seasonal winter/spring closures that  Game & Fish   will set based on the needs of the wildlife.
  • SCSP is working with Weed and Pest to develop a weed management plan to minimize the spread of weeds during and after construction.
  • The trail route was designed primarily by Rio Rose (Lander Cycling Club) with consultation by Caleb Owen (State Parks Non-Motorized Trail Crew).
  • Trail construction will include some work with a mini-excavator and then hand tool work.  There will be minimal impact to the surrounding ground/habitat and all efforts will be made to protect the natural resource.
  • Construction dates have not been determined and will be based on the public input  timeline and response.
