About Our Site - Oregon Trail Ruts
Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site (OTRSHS) provides visitors the opportunity to view and experience some of the best-preserved evidence of the great overland migration of the west, the Trail Ruts. Here emigrants trekking along the California, Oregon and Mormon trails struggled to make passage from the relatively level river bottom land to the rugged and rocky landscape of the High Plains. The wear of thousands of wagon wheels is clearly visible in soft sandstone rock. Impressive ruts, in some places over five-foot deep, are found just a short walk from the site’s parking area. The site offers a small group picnic shelter and a public restroom. Oversight and operational management of the site is provided by Guernsey State Park.
