About Our Site - Quebec 01

About - Quebec 01

Description:

The Quebec-01 Missile Alert Facility is significant as the only accessible Peacekeeper Missile Alert Facility left in the world and will strive to preserve and interpret the Cold War history of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, fostering an understanding of the mission and duties of the personnel and crews assigned to work there.

Built in 1962 as a Minuteman I Launch Control Center it was upgraded to a Peacekeeper Missile Alert Facility in 1986.  Visitors have the opprotunity to go 50 feet down into the Capsule and get a guided tour of where the United States would launch one of it's most powerful weapons ever deployed.

History

In 1962, Quebec-01 was constructed as a Minuteman I Launch Control site.  Through the years the site was upgraded to a Minuteman III site and finally, in 1986, it was converted to a Peacekeeper site.  Quebec-01 Missile Alert Facility was part of five flights of Peacekeeper Missile Alert Facilities in the 400th Missile Squadron, each controlling ten nuclear missiles, with each missile outfitted with ten nuclear warheads.  Making the 400th Missile Squadron the most powerful combat unit in history. Further, F.E. Warren Air Force Base was the only base in the world that deployed Peacekeeper missiles, known as the most advanced and destructive Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System ever built.  The Peacekeeper system was decommissioned in 2005 to meet the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty (SORT) limits on operationally deployed warheads and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty II (START II) restrictions on having multiple warheads per missile.  The last Peacekeeper was removed from alert on September 19, 2005, and the 400th Missile Squadron was deactivated.
