About - Names Hill

Description:

Names Hill Historic Site is located along U.S. 189 near La Barge, Wyoming. Fort Bridger State Historic Site oversees, maintains, and interprets Names Hill. The site is a notable location along the Oregon-California Trail where emigrants carved their names into the soft limestone after crossing the Green River.

Names Hill is located on the west side of U.S. 189 approximately six miles south of La Barge Wyoming. The site includes a monument and two interpretive signs.

History:

Names Hill State Historic Site is a steep cliff rising above the Green River and is one of three locations along the Oregon Trail where emigrants registered their presence. At Names Hill they camped and carved their names into the soft limestone. The earliest carving dates back to 1822, making it the oldest pioneer inscription in Wyoming.

The most famous inscription on Names Hill is that of mountain man James (Jim) Bridger, who despite reportedly being unable to read or write left his mark here in 1844.

Other inscriptions include pictographs left by the American Indians.

Names Preserved in Rock

March 28, 2017

When you stop by Names Hill, stop for a moment and take stock of the history you are standing amongst. Mountain Men inscriptions date back to 1822, and thousands of emigrants crossed the very spot you are standing on. Take a look at the names on the rock and imagine the range of emotions you might have felt after having just successfully crossed the 40 miles of waterless desert and then the Green River located to the east.
