Self-Guided Interpretive Trail - FORT PHIL KEARNY
About:
Three main interpretive trails: Fort Phil Kearny – mostly flat, wide, pea gravel trail acceptable for use by most large-wheeled strollers. Fetterman Battlefield – 1.5 miles round-trip, rolling hills, single-track trail. Wagon Box- very short paved walking path in teardrop shape – pit toilets and picnic shelter available at Wagon Box.
More Information:
- Always bring water, proper footwear, and proper outer wear. Weather changes rapidly and dramatically in Wyoming. Fetterman Battlefield users are warned to watch the trail ahead of them, and stay on the path – rattlesnakes are plentiful at that site, especially in August.
Location
- I-90 Exit 44, West off Interstate, 3 miles to Right Turn to Fetterman Battlefield
- I-90 Exit 44 West off Interstate 3 miles to Left Turn to Fort Phil Kearny
- I-90 Exit 44 West off Interstate 6 miles to Story, WY, Left on Fish Hatchery Road in Story, WY, then Left onto Wagon Box Road, .5 miles on Wagon Box Road then Left into Interpretive Area (past a private residence).
Availability
- Summer/Fall – Deep snow will impede trails. Wagon Box Area closed in Winter/Early Spring
Fees
- Day use fees apply at Fort Phil Kearny – Wagon Box and Fetterman Battlefield are not ticketed areas
