Fort Phil Kearny is excited to be offering a series of guided hikes this summer to promote outdoor recreation.

In addition to the site’s amazing historical and cultural significance, there is also a network of trails throughout the site that offer superb hiking and biking opportunities. These guided hikes seek to promote these recreational opportunities and offer new naturalist programming at the historical site.

Interpretive Staff will be holding six guided hikes from May through August, and each will have their own unique interpretive aspects. There will be two guided hikes to the top of Pilot Knob where soldiers kept watch of the surrounding area and used flag signals to communicate back to the fort.

Additionally, there will be a birding walk offered in partnership with Bighorn Audubon to identify and learn about bird species in the area – hopefully including the popular Bobolinks. Finally, there will be a night hike offered on the weekend of the strawberry full moon.

Another exciting aspect of the hiking programming includes women’s-specific hikes. There will be two women’s hikes hosted at the fort to offer women a unique opportunity to connect with nature and with each other through a fun shared experience.

Hikes are listed below:

● Women’s Hike: Thursday, May 30th at 6:30PM

● Hike to Pilot Knob: Saturday, June 8th at 10AM

● Birding Walk with Bighorn Audubon: Friday, June 21st at 9 AM

● Strawberry Full Moon Night Hike: Saturday, June 22nd at 8:30PM

● Hike to Pilot Knob: Thursday, August 1st at 6:30PM

● Women’s Hike: Thursday, August 22nd at 6:30PM

Participants should meet at the Visitor Center for all hikes, and they are included in the price of site entry. A new trails map is currently being developed to spread awareness of the trails at Fort Phil Kearny which will be available on our website soon. Events and their descriptions can be viewed on the Fort Phil Kearny Facebook page, wyoparks.info/fpkevents, or on the FPK/BTA website: fortphilkearny.com/events.
