About:

Independence Rock is a giant granite monolith that served as one of the landmarks along the Oregon trail. The Rock's tallest point is 136 feet above the terrain. The Rock was a mile stone for travelers heading west. It became a register of names from one of the earliest 1824 to dates into the 1930s. 18 US code SS 1361- it is illegal to deface, deprecate or damage a national monument. W.S. 36-4-115.

Visitors to the Rock:

The following names and dates were compiled before 1930, from time-to-time, by members of the Casper Chamber of Commerce and Natrona County Historical Society. Information is recorded as appears in booklet "Independence Rock, The Great Record of the Desert" by Robert Spurrier Ellison, published in 1930 by the Natrona County Historical Society.
